Discernment

We have a serious problem with too much in our lives. Discernment – the practice of cutting away – will help us to determine what is important and what is trivial.

How often do we find ourselves in a predicament or a situation without knowing how we got there? The daily practice of observation will show us the areas in our lives that we have to prune and cut back so that we can flourish.

‘It is not our abilities that make us who we are, but who we choose to be.’ – Albas Dumbledore

Bad habits and unproductive thinking can keep our focus on what we have to give up and hide the opportunities before us.

What must stay? If something does not spark joy, it must go. Be grateful for the joy it once brought you, how it served you, and the growth you experienced from it. Then let it go.

By cutting away, we have the opportunity to sow in others’ lives. What is old and useless to us, maybe new and useful to someone who does not have it. Wealth should not flow in and out but circulate. Be giving not only of the possessions with which you are blessed, give your time, knowledge, and love. They will come back to you in places you least expect them.
